Is Rock Music Truly Dead? Let’s Talk

 25 November 2025

The debate of whether rock is dead or not is truly an engaging topic since there is a lot to say. Let’s get through the complete analysis of rock’s current situation.

Rock Music Truly Dead

Rock is considered to be the mother genre of music as it has given birth to many sub-genres, including alt-rock, neo-rock, metal rock, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and the list goes on. While Rock was one of the most dominant music genres in the industry, it is no longer reigning over the industry. If you even ask the modern music lovers about their favorite rock bands, they will probably talk about AC DC and Metallica, as there are no major rock bands in the modern music industry where K-pop girl groups and boy bands are thriving more than anything as a group act.

The phrase ‘Rock is dead’ might anger a lot of people, but it is a hard-to-swallow pill that has currently become the reality. Rock is not literally dead, as you can still participate in the live concerts and music tours held by the veteran rock bands such as Foo Fighters and Dream Theater. However, these bands had already reigned over the industry when there was not even an online streaming platform. Perhaps, it is the golden period of rock as well as the music industry, as artists and bands did not have to rely on the AI-powered algorithms for that. No major rock band has emerged in recent years, and the genre has lost its place in mainstream music. It has lost its overall popularity, and currently, the mother genre is thriving through the sub-genres that no longer imitate the authentic flavors of rock.

While rock has become more inclusive of women and people of color, the reign of white rock bands is no longer visible. If seen from the perspective of the industry, rock is no longer a money-making genre, and the fans and listeners are more invested in pop, hip-hop, and EDM. Rock has been shunned by the other genres in both aspects of profitability and popularity, and so, it is safe to say that ‘Rock is dead’ for the industry, but for the listeners. Talking about the industry standards is very important here, as the active ignorance towards rock is widely visible. For example, Grammy 2025 decided not to televise the category for the best rock act or “Best Rock Song”. Not sure if it was a clerical error or straight reluctance, Avenged Sevenfold managed to get a nomination this year, and the band members were not able to show up at the ceremony. Foo Fighters took the award home, and it seems like the authority could not recognize anyone but David Grohl and his mates.

Even when the top charts are analyzed, it is clear that rock is not the genre that everyone is focusing on. Billboard rock charts have almost disappeared, and it has only become a chart for adding pop artists who occasionally like to pose like rock stars. Guess what? Imagine Dragons possesses the top three slots on the rock songs list, and other bands like Godsmack and Arctic Monkeys are considered to be part of the list as well. Currently, the decades-old rock albums are suddenly becoming relevant because of the death of a rock legend or some young artist paying tribute to them. Even though rock tracks are always relevant for their poetic approach and rebellious energy, it seems like most people like to listen to those songs only when they are featured in a Marvel movie. For instance, The Guardians of the Galaxy 2 soundtrack has successfully dominated the top rock charts for a total of 22 weeks last year, and it even hit the no.1 spot. However, none of the tracks from the soundtrack are from this era or were originally created for the movie. Similarly, ‘Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)’ by Kate Bush, which was featured in the series Stranger Things, as well as ‘Like a Prayer’ by Madonna, which was featured in ‘Deadpool vs Wolverine’. Although these are pop tracks, the pattern of reviving old tracks is highly noticeable.

Hip-hop is currently dominating the music industry, and it seems like this domination has severely wounded the quality of real hip-hop music. Previously, Kanye West gained over seven million streams for his album, which went to the number one on the chart, even though this man has never done rock and not even good hip-hop in recent days. Therefore, it is evident that rock has become irrelevant to the industry. It is not just about the sales numbers, but the overall preference for rock music has decreased significantly. The bands like Japandroids, The Menzingers, The Gaslight Anthem, etc, many others are actively participating in fests and live concerts, but they are playing for half-empty fields. Meanwhile, the autotuned voice of Travis Scott is able to gather millions of new-age kids who are literally squishing each other on the front row. It is safe to say that the craze for hip-hop is gone now.

Even though it seems very grim for the rock genre, perhaps it is the best because rock has always carried that underdog energy. Looking back to the boom period of rock grunge and neo-rock in the 90s, a lot of bands emerged at the time that captivated the global music lovers, such as Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Green Day, and so on. However, these big names took away the shine from other bands like Dear Yous and others. There are many castaways who drowned while the waves succeeded in taking others. Another trend that ruined rock’s originality is the bands and artists who always tried to copy other legendary bands that created a solid foundation with their originality. For example, if you have heard Perfect Circle, you might have already thought about Tool, and they call it inspired work.

No matter what profound reasons, it can be said that rock is a dying genre, even if it is not dead yet. And, there is no way to blame artists for that, as it’s the listening perception that shapes the music industry. The industry only cares about what makes money, and rock stars are unable to pull in more profit. Keep listening to rock music to keep it alive!
